Spare Me These Rhetoric’s About Igbos!
Spare Me These Rhetoric’s About Igbos! Igwenazor Chinaemerem
It can be factly stated that the woes of an Igbo man climaxed in the entity called Nigeria during and after the genocidal Nigeria – Biafra war of 1967 to 1970. At the end of the coordinated massacre, the devilish economic emasculation of the Igbos was set in motion yet against them and till date, all hands has been on deck to entrench it without a slight idea of when it would come to an end.
The Jews of Israel are a people the Igbos claim strong affinity with. These people [Jews] have a long serial policies by different governments decades ago carefully thought out against them and executed with quantum negative results. Comparing these two people, you will come across lots of similarities in negative experience. However, today the progress achieved by the Jewish nation cannot be equated with that of Igbos. Why you may ask? Political structure! While Igbos are part of the amalgamated nation of Nigeria, Israel is a sovereign nation.
In the world today, you cannot talk of all round development – educational, social, religious, economic et al without a political structure backed on independence and sovereignty. This is the seat from where leadership is defined and achieved from. Once progressive ideas are articulated at the topmost leadership seat, it will effortlessly trickle down to other facets or strata of the people’s life. Today, the whole world claps for Rwanda just because her leadership got it right. No great country on planet earth did its exploits without an iconic leadership and structure.
Why this topic – Spare Me These Rhetorics About Igbos? On countless occasions, some Igbos has found it convenient to openly label the present day Igbos inferior to the blood and generation of old. Why? They are of the opinion that they cannot take good care of all that concerns them. In reality as it is today, the Igbos have left Igbo land – it is semi deserted. Our weakest, the old are at home. Our core investments are outside Igbo land. The East – Abuja/Lagos migration is forever on the increase while the loud call to develop Igbo land seems to elude both the educated, the mega rich and pitifully the scores of elected political office holders. But all these negativities are fruits of the country’s system and never purely Igbo induced to a large extent.
A simple analysis of the sustained East – Abuja/Lagos migration simply tells you that it is the search for greener pastures induced. The search for the greener pastures makes a place like Lagos a destination for many. This is not for any other tangible reason but the fact that businesses thrive when you have a population to take care of. For the ever skyrocketing population of Lagos, different business openings attending to human needs makes profit by offering the masses what they need on a fee. The Igbo negative rhetorics could be taken care of the day a lasting formulae to reverse the trend is established.
The major thrust of these Igbo rhetorics merchants is this, if Igbos are not lost and this generation inferior to that of old why is Igbo land as it is irrespective of their loudly proclaimed entrepreneurial wizardry? Well and good, the fact that Igbos are synonymous with entrepreneurship is not a subject of debate. Year by year, her ingenuity keeps raising unfortunately they are grossly under-utilized and productive. The almighty Jews suffered the same fate. All their best was spread across the globe while the home front was a desert. It was so until they were proclaimed a nation in 1948. On clinching their independence – political independence, they fashioned out policies to drive the goals and aspirations. Just in about few decades of their political nationhood, they have re-written their history and the whole world stands in awe of this people.
Being an Igbo in Nigeria in the present day Nigerian system drains off all that pertains to Igboness. Many writers and public speakers have asked why it is hard for Igbos to re-enact the successful days of Eastern Nigeria – Yes, it was for a reason : Igbos were in a region administered by their own. They were independent of “Nigeria” The great Zik marshaled out a development plan of 1954 – 1964. Michael Okpara who took over from Zik as the Premier of Eastern Nigeria never took his eyes off the standard. When the military ended the era of Regions, Chief Sam Mbakwe came up with the brand of leadership that will make a difference, ere his ideas blossom, the military returned once again snuffing life out of all his good will.
The real development of a people is tied to a nation with a political sovereignty. The Israelites, the Japanese, the Germans, the Chinese and host of others not forgetting the newest kid in the block – Rwanda. Dare give the Igbo nation a country of theirs and a new chapter in the world history will emerge. People may be educated, had strong values, opted for a suitable tradition or religion, even be the smartest where they are found – unless they are working under a framework of ideas that are politically secured for them by themselves, it’s a merry go round.
Where is PRODA Enugu and what it was drafted to do? Where is Enyimba FC? Where are the mind blowing innovations of Biafra during the genocidal war? Where is Ezekiel Unogu and his automobile invention? Where are the award winning invention of the five Onitsha young girls? Where is Emeka Nelson with his invention – a generator that runs on ordinary water? I can go on and on. They are all Igbos but all they got was claps, awards, profiled interviews and articles and to end it all Nunc Dinmitis was sang for them. If Igbos were a nation of their own, just these few ideas would have created companies and economies in Igbo land but never in Nigeria.
The rhetorics are the sons of Jeremiah. It has lasted for so long. Tomorrow we await the days of Nehemiah.
